The Greatest Things Men Can Do
Dear Brothers,
What is the simplest and greatest thing we can do, as men, who know and serve Jesus?
It is to express our love and adoration to Him. I’m not talking about singing with our lips a song in church or merely saying the words in a prayer. I’m talking about looking at him and truly expressing love to him.
Songwriter Fernando Ortega has many songs that are deep and full of longing and love for Jesus. In “Sing to Jesus,” he invites us to come to Jesus look on him, and sing a song of responding love.
Sometimes we just need to say to Jesus, “I love you,” and it changes our entire day.
Gradually, as we do this regularly, it changes our relationship with Him. and when you experience that kind of growing relational love, not just theological theory love, and when you have that deep sense that we are loved even in spite of our many faults, weaknesses and sins — it truly changes our lives. It changes is because that is what we need as men — to be loved.
His love is not abstract. In a selfless act of dying we see his marvelous love for us, on the cross. His love is not dependent on us being good enough — as his children we never need to earn our Father’s love. It is a precious gift — freely given — and it does not arrive in tiny drips —- for He showers it upon us!
In this song we hear the man’s heart longing. He realizes such a great and deep love and he responds with love. That is a relationship.
Rising up from such an embrace from Jesus, of course, we will live for him, pouring out our lives for people he wants to invite into his love — and we will gladly do this for as long as we have breathe on this earth. And yet ministry is not the greatest thing we can do.
But for those whose have been touched by His heart, we allow our souls to be permeated time and again with Everlasting love and so we speak out our love for Him once more. And it is a new moment. For we are speaking to God, the almighty creator of everything, our father. This is the single greatest thing we will ever do with our temporary lives.
“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:6-8
